Travis Larson Band - Burn Season
Nevele
Okay, this is cheesy. Parts of this tune are in 11/8 time, so of course, the title is ELEVEN spelled backward. Turns out "Nevele" is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Hansbeke, Landegem, Merendree, Nevele proper, Poesele and Vosselare. On January 1st, 2005 Nevele had a total population of 11,056. The total area is 51.89 km² which gives a population density of 213.05 inhabitants per km². So there's that. And we're still not sure how it is really pronounced.

Burn Season
The title track was spawned the summer of '03 during one of the worst fire seasons in California. We were in Los Angeles staying in some dirtbag hotel with several hours to kill before the show. That morning was beautiful and clear, there was talk of going for a swim that afternoon. After hours of watching bad cable tv, we headed outside. The whole sky was red and filled with ash; California snow. It was creepy, silent and still, but somehow peaceful and beautiful. A rebirth. So goes the concept for this song. Kinda creepy, but beautiful. And, it's over seven minutes long so that's neat.

Edges
The first song we wrote for this album, the guitar parts are obviously influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Obviously, I say. The title is just one of those from our little book of "possible song titles", so nothing really special there. Sorry. I was going for more raw edge sounds in my solos (not sure if that comes across), so I guess that's the connection.

No Fate
Inspired by some of the cool Foo Fighters heavy rock riffs, this is a fun song live. Truth be told, the melody is "reminiscent" of the Terminator theme. "There is NO FATE but what we make". Okay, so I am a big dorky Terminator fan. So? So what if I have a life size T-101 casting in a display case?

Heads or Tales
The main theme for this song was originally written with a looper. This tune went through many title changes. "The Jazz Tune" was the working title, then "Road Less Traveled" (revoked because of that famous guy's poem), and finally "Heads or Tales" due to Jen's obsessive habit of flipping a coin when she can't make up her mind about something. I think this tune has the best bass solo on the record, so I guess she gets dibs on the title.

Axe to Grind
Another in the book of possible titles, way too cheesy to pass up. And it's kind of "grindy", don't you think? The chorus in this tune is one of my favorites and I dig the double-time section.

People Get Ready
Most everyone knows this story already, but here's the short of it. I'm a big Jeff Beck fan. Huge. In fact he's the reason I picked up guitar. Specifically this tune is the reason I picked up guitar. So I thought it would be a cool homage and it's just such a cool song. Thanks to my brotha Steve Lukather, this version is exactly what I hoped for.

Enough Said
This tune stems from a live guitar solo that I've done for many years. It's one of those songs that fell together and when it was finished, it felt like "enough said".

Strawberry Spring
This is an old tune that Jen and I have played for many years at our duet shows. I decided it was time to finally record it. The title comes from the eleventh short story in Stephen King’s “Night Shift" where in 1968 when the strawberry spring, a ‘false’ spring, much like Indian summer, broke. It brought a thick fog, which covered the college campus at nighttime, providing perfect cover for ‘Springheel Jack’ a serial killer. So, now you know the dirty little background.

Barrage A Trois
Affectionately called #10 by Jen's dad (possibly embarrassed by the innuendo), Barrage has become a TLB classic. I think it's interesting that the bass line is in 6/8 time over a double-time 4/4 feel. On the last tour we closed most of the shows with this one, which looking back, probably not the best call. Can you say bloody fingers??

Dirty Magic
This tune is different for TLB, but turned out really cool. Heavy riffs reminiscent of Rush and Led Zeppelin earned the working title of "Russian Zeptune" (Rush and Zep....). The final title came from me trying to describe Luke's tone and technique as we had just finished working with him on People Get Ready down at Steakhouse Studios. I said something along the lines of "It's like dirty magic", and Jen's eyes lit up.

Seclusion (With You)
Another tune that was written many years ago. Perhaps the weirdest song on the record and definitely not your typical TLB tune. I became friends with Vinx a few years ago and when I was working this tune up for the record I felt it really needed some intense percussion. Who better? I sent Vinx some tracks and told him to go nuts. The result was a pleasant surprise and however unsure we were about it fitting in with the rest of the album, it kind of didn't matter. It's just a cool song with a uniquely cool vibe.

Travis Larson Band - Suspension
934
This is an interesting story. The working title for this tune was “Snack Flight”, named after a short flight Dale took to Seattle. He thought it was so funny, but everyone else thought it was kinda lame. So, it was the last night of recording and the band had gone out to dinner to discuss album details like song titles. As we ate our Taco Bell meal, Jen pointed to the receipt and our dinner total: $9.34. There you have it.

Full Suspension
This is one of my brother’s titles, based loosely on bike riding. Since he just bought his new full suspension mountain bike, he had trouble thinking about anything else. The song itself is very light and kind of pop. So the feeling of suspension fit well.

Powerdown
Powerdown is just one of those terms we use often in rehearsals. The band uses many different triggering devices. We are all linked together via MIDI signals, so to avoid any mis-triggering or non-operation, we maintain a sequence of powering up and powering down. We sometimes like to pretend we’re in a shuttle cockpit, flipping switches and reading gauges. And of course barking sequence orders like “powerdown”. Dorks.

Return To Zero
This tune is for the most part in 9/8 time. Hence, returning to zero. And actually, truth be told, Jen finally figured out what the little button “RTZ” on the ADAT machine stood for and thought it was cool.

Georgia On My Mind
We started doing this tune live, just for fun and it mixed things up a bit. When we were discussing which songs to record and put on the album this one came up. Jen was convinced it would be extremely cool, but only if we could get Victor Wooten to play on it. And he did, and it is.

Crosstalk
Hmmm… As I recall it was discussed that this tune is complicated and busy, reminiscent of a telephone “party line”.

Sandusky Trail
Cute story. Back in the day, Jen asked me to help her write a song for her dad for Father’s Day because she had no money to buy him anything. Her gift was the song and that he could title it anything he wanted. He came up with Sandusky Trail because it reminded him of a place he had been in Oklahoma, of the same name. It was never meant to end up on any album, but it turned out to be one of my favorites.

Frantic Manic
Another brother title. Not sure where it came from, except for that it vaguely describes my brother. And the tune is a little on the hyper-frantic side.

Touch
This song is kind of my tribute to Jeff Beck. The title Touch just seemed to describe the mood. I always imagine summer wheat fields in Tehachapi, CA when I hear this tune.

Aftertouch
Well, it’s the song right after Touch. Duh.

Squeeze & Shake
Okay, we get our titles from really dumb places. With instrumental music you pretty much have free reign. Anyway, at the local video store they have these plastic boxes the movies are in. To remove the movie you must “squeeze and shake”. The intro to this tune has a kind of off-kilter squeezing and shaking vibe. I guess.

Times Like These
Jen was again in one of her very reflective moods. She was just tripping out on how cool the here and now can be. So there you go. The working titles for this tune were many: Snow Angel, Aurora Borealis, and the Color of Wind, which garnered far too many snickers (and fart jokes) to be taken seriously.

Travis Larson Band - S/T
Nut Boy
I-am-the-Nutboy...(to be said alike Adam Sandler circa "Remote Control" era.)

Short Fuse
This tune was written many years ago when I played in a cover band with a psycho drummer, who shall, for no reason other than he would kick my ass for calling him a psycho cause that`s just how psycho he is, remain nameless. The title exemplifies his temper and his drumming style.

Nameless
Another reference to a slightly less psychotic, much more neurotic drummer, who I stole from a Bay Area band, The Names. Hence, "Nameless". Really we just couldn`t come up with a name for it.

The Big Snuggle Up
Originally titled “I Love You Man”, this bump & grind tune went through many changes before we nailed it (heh heh, snicker). The true TLB fans still scream “I love you man!” I try not to let it go to my head.

Know Strings Attached
This was the title track of a 4 song EP we released with the previous drummer (just call us Spinal Tap), in 1995. My brother came up with the title – He thinks its so clever.

Transcendental Dream
This tune I wrote when I was just a youngster at 19 (during my Mike Post days). How it ended up on the album, I`m not sure. Dale thought it was such a great, cheesy tune. Dale and Jen learned it that day and recorded it in one take, while faking “still shots” from early 80’s police show intros.

A.D.D.
One of the first songs written with Dale Moon, this one is self-explanatory. It was also recorded live – we just couldn’t do it any other way.

Counter Parts
Jen thinks this one sounds like a pirate ship song with a bit of Magnum PI mixed in. (?)

Window Falls
Between drummers, Jen & I used to do acoustic shows. "Window Falls" was written during one of those periods. This song was not intended to be on the album, but what the hell.

Morse Code
Kind of our tribute to Steve Morse and his passion for music.

Wilma
During our live shows this tune would begin with Fred Flintstone belting out his infamous “W-I-L-M-A!” followed by those slippery drums. You know the ones. For copyright reasons, it didn’t end up on the album, but Wilma is still with us.

Junkabalaja
My mom makes this kind of stewish, soupish, chillish thing called Junkablaja. She throws pretty much all the end-of-the-week food substances into it. And that’s what this tune is all about – leftovers.

Stratospheric Alien Boundaries
A somewhat spacey friend of a friend’s friend sat in on a session for this tune (originally just "Boundaries"). Afterward he came up to me with this huge grin on his face. He slurred, “Man, you are out there in the stratosphere!” Spit’s flyin. I had to quote him on that – we threw “alien” in for good measure, and well, there’s been rumors...

Sincerely Yours
Just a sweet little love song.
